Adult Day Services for Seniors: What They Are and What to Ask
Adult day services are daytime programs where older adults can spend time in a supervised group setting, then return home in the evening. They are sometimes used by families who care for a loved one at home and need a break. Programs differ by provider and by state.
What adult day services are
An adult day program is usually a place a person attends for part of the day, on some or all weekdays. Staff run activities and meals, and some programs also offer health-related support. It is not an overnight stay.
What programs may offer
- Social activities, games and group outings
- Meals and snacks
- Help with personal tasks such as moving around or using the restroom
- Reminders or help with medications, depending on the program and state rules
- Exercise or therapy activities, in some programs
- Transportation, in some programs
Who it may suit
Families sometimes look at day services when a loved one should not be home alone for long stretches, or when a caregiver needs time for work, rest or appointments. It may also suit someone who would enjoy company and structure during the day.
How it differs from other options
- Home care: a caregiver comes to the house, while day services take place outside the home
- Assisted living: a place to live, with care available around the clock
- Respite care: short stays or breaks that give caregivers time off
Questions to ask a program
- What does a typical day look like?
- What kind of help with personal care is available?
- Is the program licensed or certified in this state, and by whom?
- What is the staff-to-participant ratio?
- How are fees set, and what is included?
- How does the program handle a medical emergency or a change in condition?
- Can we visit and try a trial day first?
Paying for it
Families may pay out of pocket, and in some cases long-term care insurance, veterans benefits or state programs may help. Eligibility rules differ, so ask the program and your local Area Agency on Aging what applies to you.
Next step
If day services are not enough and a move is being considered, an advisor can help you compare communities. HavenLine is a referral service, not a care provider.
Questions
Is adult day care the same as a nursing home?
No. Participants go home each day. A nursing home is a residence with around-the-clock nursing care.
Does Medicare pay for adult day services?
Original Medicare generally does not cover custodial adult day care. Some other programs may help, so ask the provider and your local Area Agency on Aging.
