Senior living
Aging in Place or Senior Living: How to Decide
Many older adults want to stay at home. Others find that a community gives them safety and company. Here is a simple way to think about both.
Questions about home
- Is the home safe: stairs, bathrooms, lighting, fall risks?
- Who helps with meals, medication, cleaning and rides?
- What would happen in an emergency at night?
- What are the real yearly costs of repairs, taxes and home care?
Questions about a community
- Which services are included and which cost extra?
- Does the person want to move, and who is involved in the decision?
- Is there a way to try a short stay first?
A middle path
Some families start with in-home help or adult day programs, then move to a community later. Review the plan every few months, because needs change.
