Assisted Living vs Memory Care vs Independent Living
These three types of senior living sound alike but serve different needs. Knowing the difference helps you ask the right questions.
Independent living
For people who do not need daily care. Usually includes a private apartment, meals, housekeeping and social activities, depending on the community.
Assisted living
For people who want help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, meals or medication reminders, in a residential setting.
Memory care
For people living with dementia, including Alzheimer’s. Communities have staff trained in memory care and a secure, easy to navigate layout.
Some communities offer more than one level
Ask whether a person can move to a higher level of care in the same community if needs change, and how that affects the cost.
Questions
How do I know which one is right?
An advisor can ask about daily needs, safety and budget, then suggest the level that fits. You can always tour first.
