Assisted living

For people who want a home-like setting and need some help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, medication reminders or meals. Residents usually have their own apartment or room, with staff nearby.

Nursing home

Also called a skilled nursing facility. For people who need ongoing medical care and nursing supervision around the clock, for example after a serious illness or when health needs are complex.

Key differences

  • Level of care: help with daily living versus continuous medical and nursing care
  • Setting: residential and social versus more clinical
  • Staffing: nurses are on site in a nursing home; assisted living staffing varies by state and community
  • Cost: nursing home care usually costs more, but this varies by place

How each is paid for

Medicare may cover a limited stay in a skilled nursing facility after a qualifying hospital stay, but generally does not pay for long term custodial care. Medicaid can pay for nursing home care for people who qualify. Assisted living is more often paid privately, with some state programs helping.

How to decide

  • Ask the doctor what level of care is needed now and likely later
  • Visit both types of places, at different times of day
  • Ask what happens if care needs increase

Questions

Can someone move from assisted living to a nursing home later?

Yes. Many people do if their needs grow. Ask the community how they handle this.
