Subsidized senior apartments

Some apartment communities for older adults offer rent based on income. HUD supports a program often called Section 202 for supportive housing for seniors, and there are other income-based communities run by local housing groups.

Housing choice vouchers

Local housing authorities run voucher programs that can help pay part of the rent in a home you find yourself. Waiting lists are common, so ask to be added as soon as you can.

Affordable and 55 plus communities

Some communities for people aged 55 and older have lower rent or income limits. Always ask what the income limits are, and what is included in the rent.

Help with care costs

Some states have programs that help low income older adults with care services at home or in assisted living. Your local Area Agency on Aging can explain what exists where you live.

How to start

  • Call your local housing authority and ask about senior waiting lists
  • Contact your Area Agency on Aging for local options
  • Gather proof of income, ID and any benefit letters before you apply
  • Apply to several places, and keep copies of every application
