Assisted Living Checklist: What to Look For on a Visit
Use this checklist when you visit assisted living communities. Bring it, take notes, and compare the same points everywhere.
Care and staff
- Which help with daily tasks is included, and which costs extra?
- How are care needs reviewed, and how often?
- Is a nurse on site, and during which hours?
- How does the community handle emergencies at night?
The building
- Is it clean and does it smell fresh?
- Are halls, bathrooms and rooms easy to get around, including with a walker?
- Are outdoor areas safe and easy to reach?
Daily life
- Ask to taste a meal and see the weekly menu
- Ask for an activity calendar
- Watch how staff talk to residents
Money and contract
- Ask for all fees in writing
- Ask what raises the price and how often
- Ask what happens if care needs grow or money runs low
- Read the contract before you sign, or have someone you trust read it
