The core difference

Independent living is housing with services for people who do not need help with daily care. Assisted living adds help with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing and medication reminders, based on an assessment of the resident.

Side by side

  • Care: independent living generally has none built in; assisted living provides help with daily activities.
  • Assessment: assisted living usually starts with a care assessment; independent living often does not.
  • Staffing: assisted living has caregivers on site; independent living is more hotel- or apartment-style.
  • Fees: assisted living often has a base fee plus a care level; independent living is often a single monthly fee. Both vary widely.
  • Regulation: rules for assisted living are set by each state, and terms differ.

Signs it may be time to look at assisted living

  • Missed medications or meals
  • Difficulty with bathing or dressing
  • Falls or safety concerns at home
  • A caregiver who is tired or stretched thin

Planning ahead

Some communities offer both levels on one campus, which can make a later move simpler. Ask how care needs are reassessed and how fees change if needs grow.

Ask a doctor

A doctor or care team can help judge which level of support suits a person, and many communities will do their own assessment too.

Next step

An advisor can explain both options by phone and shortlist communities near you. HavenLine is a referral service and does not provide medical advice.

Questions

Can someone move from independent to assisted living in the same place?

Some communities offer both. Ask how the move works and how fees change.
