How to Choose a Memory Care Community

Choosing memory care is a big decision. A clear checklist helps you compare communities calmly. This is general information, not medical advice.

Start with the person

Write down what your loved one needs now: help with daily tasks, wandering risk, sleep changes, medicines, and what calms them. A doctor or care team can help describe the care level needed.

What to look at on a visit

  • How staff talk to residents: patient, respectful, at eye level
  • Dementia training for staff, and how often it is refreshed
  • Secure doors and safe outdoor areas, without feeling like a locked ward
  • Daily activities that fit different abilities, not just a calendar on the wall
  • Meal times, help with eating, and how food preferences are handled
  • Cleanliness, smell, lighting, and clear signs or cues that help residents find their way

Questions to ask

  • What does the staff schedule look like on nights and weekends?
  • How do you decide when a resident needs more care, and how are families told?
  • What is included in the monthly fee, and what costs extra?
  • What happens if needs change or a hospital stay is needed?
  • How do you handle behaviors such as agitation or wandering?
  • How can family stay involved and get updates?

Check the paperwork

Memory care is licensed in different ways depending on the state. Ask to see the current license and any recent inspection reports, and read the contract before you sign. Your state licensing agency can tell you what records are public.

Visit more than once

Go at a different time of day, such as a mealtime or an evening, and bring another family member if you can. Trust what you see and how you feel in the building.

Next step

A senior living advisor can explain the options by phone and shortlist communities near you. HavenLine is a referral service, so any community you hear about is a suggestion to check for yourself.
