How to Talk to Your Parents About Senior Living
This talk is hard for many families. A calm start and good listening make it easier for everyone.
Before you talk
- Learn the options first: independent living, assisted living, memory care, home care
- Agree within the family who will speak and what you want to say
- Pick a calm time, not a crisis
During the talk
- Start with your concern, not a decision: "I worry about..."
- Ask what matters most to them: independence, home, friends, safety
- Listen without arguing the first time
- Plan a small next step, such as a visit, not a move
If they say no
Give it time. Try again later, bring in a trusted doctor or friend, and keep the focus on safety and choice.
