1. Make sure everyone is safe

  • Move to a safe place if you can and check for injuries
  • Call emergency services if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked
  • Many states require a police report for accidents above a certain damage level, so ask the responding officer or check your state rules

2. Gather information at the scene

  • The other driver's name, contact details, insurer and policy number
  • Licence plates, vehicle makes and models
  • Photos of all vehicles, the scene, road signs and any damage
  • Names and contact details of witnesses
  • Do not admit fault; stick to the facts

3. Contact your insurer soon

Most policies ask you to report an accident promptly. Many insurers let you start a claim by phone, website or app. Have your policy number, the date and location, and the details you collected ready.

4. What happens after you file

  • A claims adjuster is usually assigned to review the damage and the facts
  • The adjuster may inspect the car in person, through photos or at an approved repair shop
  • The insurer decides what the policy covers and who was at fault under state rules
  • You pay your deductible, and the insurer pays the covered amount above it

5. Repairs and rental cars

Ask whether you can choose your own repair shop, whether the insurer uses original or aftermarket parts, and whether your policy includes rental car reimbursement while your car is repaired. Rules and policy terms differ.

6. If the other driver was at fault

You may claim through the other driver's liability coverage, or through your own collision coverage and let your insurer recover the cost. Your agent can explain which route makes sense for your situation and state.

Questions to ask your agent

  • Will this claim change my premium at renewal?
  • What is my deductible for this type of claim?
  • How long does a claim usually take?
  • What if the repair estimate is higher than expected?

Questions

Should I file a claim for a small dent?

It depends on the repair cost compared with your deductible and whether a claim could affect your premium. Ask your agent before deciding.

How long do I have to file?

Policies and state rules set time limits. Report the accident as soon as you reasonably can.

What if the other driver has no insurance?

Uninsured motorist coverage, if you have it, may help. Rules vary by state.
