Minimum car insurance in Florida.
What Florida requires, in plain words, and why the minimum may not be enough.
The minimum limits
Florida does not set a minimum bodily injury liability limit in the way most states do. The rules below summarise what drivers there are required to carry.
How the system works
Florida uses a no-fault style system, so your own policy pays part of your medical costs after a crash whoever caused it. The exact rules differ from the at-fault system used in most states.
No-fault. PIP $10,000 and PD $10,000 required; BI liability not required (needed after certain crashes/violations under financial responsibility law).
If you drive without insurance in Florida
If required coverage lapses during registration, Florida says the driving privilege and plate may be suspended for up to three years, with a reinstatement fee of up to $500.
Proof of insurance
Insurers that report to FLHSMV provide policy initiation and cancellation electronically, and proof of PIP/PDL coverage must come from a Florida-licensed insurer.
SR-22 and similar filings
Florida uses the SR22 (certifying bodily injury and property damage liability) for Financial Responsibility Law reinstatement, and after a DUI conviction state law requires higher limits of $100,000/$300,000/$50,000 for at least 3 years.
Also worth knowing in Florida
Insurance-related suspensions have no provision for a temporary or hardship license, and surrendering the plate before cancelling insurance avoids suspension and reinstatement fees.
