The minimum limits

In Maryland, the minimum liability limits are written 30/60/15 (in thousands): $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for injury to everyone in one accident, and $15,000 for property damage.

How the system works

Maryland is generally an at-fault (tort) state, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible for the other party’s losses. That is why liability limits matter so much.

Tort (at-fault) state. UM/UIM 30/60 and UM property damage $15,000 required; PIP $2,500 required unless waived in writing.

What the minimum means in practice

Say a crash you cause injures three people. The Maryland minimum pays at most $30,000 to any one of them and $60,000 in total, shared between all three. Any medical bills above that could become your responsibility. Property damage stops at $15,000.

If you drive without insurance in Maryland

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration assesses a penalty for each day a vehicle was uninsured, and a lapse may also bring vehicle registration suspension or a vehicle flag. The pages read do not state the dollar amounts.

Proof of insurance

Insurers report coverage to the MVA electronically, and in most cases the owner does not need to do anything; if records suggest a lapse, the MVA may ask for a Maryland Insurance Certification Form (FR-19).

SR-22 and similar filings

The pages read do not mention SR-22; they describe the FR-19 Maryland Insurance Certification Form, which insurers must provide free to policyholders, as the way to show coverage was in place after a suspected lapse.

Also worth knowing in Maryland

Insurance must be active for the entire time a vehicle is registered, even if it is not driven, and plates must be returned before the policy ends if the owner cancels without replacing it.
