The minimum limits

In Michigan, the minimum liability limits are written 50/100/10 (in thousands): $50,000 for injury to one person, $100,000 for injury to everyone in one accident, and $10,000 for property damage.

How the system works

Michigan uses a no-fault style system, so your own policy pays part of your medical costs after a crash whoever caused it. The exact rules differ from the at-fault system used in most states.

No-fault. PIP medical required (choice of levels). BI minimum 50/100 (default 250/500); $10,000 PD applies out of state; $1M property protection (PPI) required in-state.

What the minimum means in practice

Say a crash you cause injures three people. The Michigan minimum pays at most $50,000 to any one of them and $100,000 in total, shared between all three. Any medical bills above that could become your responsibility. Property damage stops at $10,000.

If you drive without insurance in Michigan

Operating or permitting operation of a vehicle without required security is a misdemeanor with a fine of $200 to $500, up to one year in jail, or both (MCL 500.3102). Failing to produce proof on request is a civil infraction, and the court may require license surrender or a suspension of 30 days or longer until proof is submitted (MCL 257.328).

Proof of insurance

Owners and operators must produce evidence of insurance when a police officer asks, and an electronic copy shown on a device is accepted.

Also worth knowing in Michigan

If the driver shows the court proof of insurance that was in force at the time of the violation before the appearance date, the court cannot assess a fine or costs, though it may charge a fee of up to $25; no points are entered on the driving record.
