Minimum car insurance in Oregon.
What Oregon requires, in plain words, and why the minimum may not be enough.
The minimum limits
In Oregon, the minimum liability limits are written 25/50/20 (in thousands): $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for injury to everyone in one accident, and $20,000 for property damage.
How the system works
Oregon is generally an at-fault (tort) state, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible for the other party’s losses. That is why liability limits matter so much.
Tort (at-fault) state. PIP $15,000 and UM bodily injury 25/50 required.
What the minimum means in practice
Say a crash you cause injures three people. The Oregon minimum pays at most $25,000 to any one of them and $50,000 in total, shared between all three. Any medical bills above that could become your responsibility. Property damage stops at $20,000.
If you drive without insurance in Oregon
Driving uninsured is a Class B traffic violation, and a conviction requires filing proof of financial responsibility with the state for one year. Driving privileges are subject to suspension if the driver is in a crash while uninsured, and a reinstatement fee applies to any DMV suspension.
Proof of insurance
Proof must be carried in each non-exempt vehicle, may be displayed electronically without giving consent to search the device, and a citation does not apply if an officer verifies compliance through the Law Enforcement Data System.
SR-22 and similar filings
Oregon requires an SR-22 after an uninsured crash, a conviction for driving uninsured, DUII or certain other traffic crimes, or when applying for a hardship permit, and it must be maintained until the requirement ends.
Also worth knowing in Oregon
Failing to carry proof of insurance is a separate Class B violation, and the court must dismiss it if proof is delivered to the clerk before the court date.
