How to Find an Assisted Living Community: Where to Start

Finding assisted living can feel like a lot at once. A simple order of steps helps: decide what care and budget you need, build a shortlist from reliable sources, check licensing, then visit. This guide walks through that order. Rules and resources differ by state.

1. Write down the needs

  • Help needed with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, meals or medications
  • Any memory concerns, mobility needs or medical conditions
  • Preferred area, such as near family
  • Monthly budget and how it will be paid
  • Must-haves such as a private room or pet policy

2. Build a shortlist from reliable sources

  • Your local Area Agency on Aging, which can often point to local options and programs
  • The Eldercare Locator, a national service that connects people with local aging resources
  • Your doctor, hospital discharge planner or social worker
  • Friends, family and faith or community groups
  • A senior living referral service, which can suggest communities based on your needs

3. Check licensing and inspection records

Assisted living is regulated at the state level, and the rules and terms differ. Your state's licensing agency can usually tell you whether a community is licensed and may publish inspection reports. A state long-term care ombudsman program can also explain residents' rights and how complaints are handled.

4. Visit in person, more than once

  • Tour at different times, including a mealtime
  • Talk with residents and staff, not only the sales team
  • Ask to see the care plan process and a sample contract
  • Notice how staff speak to residents and how the building feels

5. Ask about costs and contracts

Ask what the monthly fee includes, how care levels are priced, how and when fees can increase, and what happens if care needs change. Read the contract fully, and consider asking a lawyer or elder care professional to review it.

6. Compare and decide without rushing

Compare your top few options on care, cost, location and how comfortable the person feels. If possible, involve the person who will be living there in the decision.

If you would like help building a shortlist, a HavenLine advisor can talk through your needs and suggest options. HavenLine is a referral service, not a care provider, and there is no obligation.

No. It is one option among several, and you can combine it with local agency resources.

Can I check a community's record?

Often yes, through your state licensing agency or ombudsman program. Rules vary by state.

General information only, not financial, legal or insurance advice. Rules, prices and benefits vary by state and by policy. A licensed professional can explain what applies to you.
