Minimum car insurance in Delaware.
What Delaware requires, in plain words, and why the minimum may not be enough.
The minimum limits
In Delaware, the minimum liability limits are written 25/50/10 (in thousands): $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for injury to everyone in one accident, and $10,000 for property damage.
How the system works
Delaware uses a no-fault style system, so your own policy pays part of your medical costs after a crash whoever caused it. The exact rules differ from the at-fault system used in most states.
Modified no-fault. PIP required at $15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident.
What the minimum means in practice
Say a crash you cause injures three people. The Delaware minimum pays at most $25,000 to any one of them and $50,000 in total, shared between all three. Any medical bills above that could become your responsibility. Property damage stops at $10,000.
If you drive without insurance in Delaware
Delaware imposes an uninsured vehicle fee of $100 for the first 30 days plus $5 for each day after, and a $50 registration reinstatement fee. A conviction for driving uninsured carries a fine of at least $1,500 for a first offense and $3,000 for later offenses within 3 years, plus a 6-month license suspension.
Proof of insurance
The DMV audits registered vehicles through the Delaware Insurance Verification System, and an audited owner has the insurer send an FR-19 certification that the vehicle has been continuously insured.
Also worth knowing in Delaware
Liability insurance must stay in effect whenever registration is valid, even if the vehicle is off the road, and tags can be surrendered before cancelling insurance.
