Assisted living in Louisiana: how it is licensed.
Who licenses assisted living in Louisiana, and what to check before you choose.
What Louisiana calls it
In Louisiana, assisted living is licensed under the term “Adult Residential Care Provider”. Other states use different names, so it helps to know the exact term when you search.
Who licenses and inspects
Louisiana Department of Health, Health Standards Section is the agency that licenses these communities. It is the official place to check a community’s license and inspection history.
Paying for care
Medicare generally does not cover long term custodial care.
Louisiana's Community Choices Waiver may help adults 21 or older who meet long-term care Medicaid eligibility and nursing home level of care with services such as personal assistance and adult day health care. The state page does not mention assisted living and says the program does not provide help 24 hours per day; eligibility rules apply.
Help and complaints
Louisiana Ombudsman Program (Governor's Office of Elderly Affairs) supports residents of long term care and their families.
