What Utah calls it

In Utah, assisted living is licensed under the term “Assisted Living Facility (Type I and Type II)”. Other states use different names, so it helps to know the exact term when you search.

Who licenses and inspects

Utah Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Licensing and Background Checks, Office of Licensing is the agency that licenses these communities. It is the official place to check a community’s license and inspection history.

What assisted living costs in Utah

The median cost of assisted living in Utah is about $5,475 a month (about $65,700 a year) for a private one-bedroom in a community, based on the 2025 CareScout Cost of Care Survey. That is $725 a month below the national median of about $6,200, and ranks Utah 38 out of 50 states from highest to lowest cost.

Your own cost depends on the community, the room size and the level of care. Ask each community for its full price list in writing, including care level fees.

Paying for care

Medicare generally does not cover long term custodial care.

Utah's Medicaid New Choices Waiver is designed to serve people living long term in a nursing facility, licensed assisted living facility or certain other facilities to help them move to community-based settings, and enrolled participants may receive Medicaid-funded supportive services. Eligibility rules apply, including nursing facility level of care.

Checking a community

Utah's Department of Licensing and Background Checks has a Find a regulated program search of its licensing records. It shows licensing compliance history for the past 36 months only, and for health facility programs the records start in October 2023; anything older needs a GRAMA request. A program marked Sanctioned is under a department action. The page also links to Medicare's Care Compare for certified facilities.

Help and complaints

Utah Long Term Care Ombudsman supports residents of long term care and their families.

Also worth knowing in Utah

Utah's licensing records search only goes back 36 months, and for health facility programs only to October 2023, so a clean recent record on that search is not the same as a clean long history. Older compliance history has to be requested in writing under GRAMA.
